President Rodrigo Duterte said on Friday that he wanted to know why the House of Representatives removed rape from the proposed list of heinous crimes punishable by the death penalty.
“I really would like to know the rationale,” Duterte told reporters in Cagayan de Oro City on Friday.
The House of Representatives on Ash Wednesday passed on second reading the proposed death penalty measure but only for drug-related crimes.
The House is expected to take up the measure on third and final reading on Tuesday.
Senators have indicated that it debates on the death penalty bill will be more exhaustive in the Senate.
Duterte reiterated his promise to end corruption in government.
“I said I’d stop corruption but I didn’t say that I’m going to kill the plunderer. What was in my mind was that corruption will stop and it will stop. Sinabi ko sa inyo hintuin ko iyan,” Duterte said.
Duterte also warned his appointees that he would fire some soon.
“So in the coming days, I’m going to fire additional people who i have appointed in government,” he said
